Exploring materials: Draff

Draff is one of the residual products in beer production and consists of malt that has been boiled and sieved. When the draff comes out of the production vessels, it is a wet thick porridge full of nutrients and has several potential uses. In this project, I investigated the function as a material that can be processed.

By combining this residual product with bone glue - which also can be described as a residual product - and cold pressing it into sheets, we can get very strong and interesting looking composite material. The material is very strong when dry and the fibers is doing a very good job keeping everything very solid. The material behave almost like wood and all wood working tools can be used while processing the sheets.

The purpose is to save on our natural resources by utilizing the natural resources that we already exploit to the maximum. By using our residual products, we can contribute to a circular economy. Purposes that are relevant to save the environment.
